The “Kunstareal” combines a great number of Munich’s most famous museums. An official city of Munich guide presents to you the museums, their most famous works and their peculiarities without going inside.
During this walk you will get a brief introduction to the individual galleries (without interior visits).
The Alte Pinakothek which was built by Leo von Klenze in the Classicistic style in 1836. This building was path-breaking for European museum architecture at the time. The museum presents milestones of European painting from the Middle Age through Renaissance to Baroque.
The Neue Pinakothek is closed to the public for structural reasons and in preparation for a comprehensive renovation scheme from 31 December 2018 until 2025. Since summer 2019, a selection of masterpieces of 19th century art has been on display on the ground floor of the Alte Pinakothek (East Wing).
The Pinakothek der Moderne accommodates the Neue Sammlung – the International Design Museum, the Collection of Modern Art, the Museum of Architecture and the Graphics Collection.
The Museum Brandhorst is a gallery displaying masterworks of contemporary art and bears the mark of Cy Twombly. A central hall of the museum is dedicated to his monumental work Lepanto (2001), which consists of twelve paintings. The hall was designed according to the artist’s vision.
Noteworthy are also the Glyptothek (antique sculptures from Greek and Roman times), the State Collection of Antiquities, Lenbachhaus gallery, the State Collection of Egyptian Art and the Crystal Museum.
This walk will encourage participants to visit the various museums on their own, where they will encounter a unique density of world-renowned art.
