Don't forget your hat, scarf and gloves, then you're ready to go. The tour starts with an ascent to the viewing platform of the Town Hall Tower. From there you have a wonderful view over the sea of lights at the foot of the New Town Hall. The wintry Christmas walk with our guides takes you then right into Munich's living room, Marienplatz, which is festively decked out for its guests at this time of year. Always follow your nose, the scent of roasted almonds leads the way. In front of the town hall, the Christmas tree as tall as a house with its countless lights provides atmospheric lighting and moments of contemplation, while the numerous stalls on the square offer hot drinks, all kinds of delicacies and inspiration for Christmas presents. There are also activities such as the heavenly workshop in the New Town Hall and much more.
Strolling through the Christmas market together with the guide is really fun because he can tell so much about the unique history of the market, for example about its origins as the oldest Christmas market in the city with roots in the 14th century, when such markets were still called St. Nicholas markets. The original Munich Christkindlmarkt has only been held here in the heart of the old town since 1972.
What's more, our guides know many of the stallholders personally, and when they tell you how much love and craftsmanship goes into their goods, you'll want to try the hand-baked stollens or the homemade liqueurs yourself or give the hand-painted Christmas tree ornament as a gift.
The guides are also very familiar with typical Munich Christmas customs. If you would also like to know how the mulled wine came to the Munich Christmas market or who built the Munich city nativity scene, then you should not miss this guided tour of the Munich Christmas market, especially as there is a free treat at the end of the tour - a bag of almonds and a mulled wine for everyone!
